Coast and Zanzibar

Three main areas are worthy of consideration:

Pangani:
Is a small, old Arab slave trading town which is worthy of a visit in its own right. Nearby are some beautiful beaches and economical lodges _eg Argovia). A visit here is a quieter and cheaper alternative to the very popular Zanzibar.
Access: Although it is possible to fly from Kilimanjaro to Tanga and then transfer 45km to Pangani area it is not too long to drive to Pangani (6-7 hours from Moshi) especialy if the journey is broken at Usambara.

Saadani:
Apart from beautiful beaches Saadani boasts a fine small National Park. In 2007 Zara plan to develop a small lodge by the beach here. Watch this space!

Zanzibar:
This very famous and much visited island has a unique and marvellous atmosphere. There is a huge choice of accommodation (see the EWP Zanzibar site. However our special recommendation for an unpretentious and very relaxing beach hotel stay in Zanzibar is the Tamarind Hotel.
Access: By far the easiest way is to fly from Kilimanjaro airport, however a cheaper option is to go by bus, the early morning bus from Moshi gets to Dar es Saalam in time for the last ferry to Zanzibar. An alternative is to drive to Tanga (possibly via Usambara) and fly from there (there are daily flights in the afternoon from Tanga to Zanzibar. Finally the very adventurous could take a fishing boat across from Pangani. The crossing takes about 2 hours and an early morning start is needed for best sea conditions.

At present most coast packages and information will be presented on the EWP site. Also the EWP staff will advise you and assist you plan your coast trip. Please use the links on the left for more information.
