Porters and Guides

Without the porters and guides most people would be unable to reach the summit of this very high mountain. Their efforts, enthusiasm and hardwork inspire and keep you going. The work is very hard and most are unable to sustain it for too many years but the money is very good - by their standards. It allows them to educate their children and feed and clothe their families. Sometimes they may be unwell and still want to work on the mountain. On a very rare occasion they may try to exploit you - if you feel under pressure to do something you feel is wrong or pay for a service that you have paid for already or demand a high tip then it is best to consult your ground operator - Zara - before agreeing to the demands.

Please do not feel embarrased to hand over to them unwanted items of clothing - they will almost be put to good use somewhere by somebody. Tips form an important part of their income and are treated very seriously. Please consult our tipping page.

Rubbish, excrement and cutting firewood on the mountain are all very serious problems, your porters and guides will as a rule clear up and remove all rubbish. Fires must not be started on the mountain and our guides all carry gas stoves. We ask all visitors to help keep the mountain clean by carrying out or handing their rubbish to their guide or porters. Please also use the toilets provided, if they are dirty the authorities at the Park Gate should be notified. It would also help to write a letter to the Park Management.
