St Eugene's Hostel and the Montessori Usumbara School Run by the St. Eugene Sisters who were originally formed in Tanga, the Montessori School and Teacher Training Centre near Lushoto has as its main aim
the training of young teachers in Tanzania in the Montessori educational system. There is a small primary school attached to the college which takes in
fee paying students from 3 to 6 years of age (with plans to extend the age range). Some local children are also accepted who's parents are unable to pay
the fees. The fees collected go towards the funding of the college, further funding schemes include small workshops where local women make clothes, batiks,
postcards etc. these are sold in the college shop. Finally the recently built St. Eugene's Hostel is aimed at tourists visiting the Usumbara area. The hostel has a vehicle and offers guiding services on any of the walks available in the Usumbara. Pleasant twin, double and triple bedded rooms with
en-suite facilities are available alongside an airy dining area and the hostel
is beautifully located in spacious and well-maintained gardens If you are not staying at the hostel, Zara still recommends a visit to the
hostel to see what first class work is being done here. Also Zara and its
agents make no profit on any of the bookings carried out for the hostel
accommodation.
